Algorithms, Geofencing, and the Future of Local Discovery

Jeivian Ramos Torres, Head of Algo & Co-Founder of Pnchy

Hello, my name is Jeivian, and I am the Algorithm Lead for PNCHY. Joining this amazing group of friends, to contribute toward our community has been both a privilege and an incredible learning experience for me. Before I explain my role and responsibilities within the app, I would like to tell you a little about myself and how I was given this amazing opportunity.

It all started in college where I met Aryan, Ethan, and Felix. We had almost every class together as undergraduate engineering students, and together we faced all kinds of challenges throughout our academic journey. One of the hardest classes we took was Ordinary Differential Equations, and that class led me to fall in love with numbers, equations, and the curiosity that mathematics brings to our understanding of the world.

Since then, I began pursuing a bachelor’s degree in mathematics to expand my understanding of how numbers and equations shape the way our world works, while also integrating that knowledge into my engineering background. It has not been an easy journey, but thanks to my friends and to God, I was able to graduate in both majors and now have the opportunity to apply both fields into PNCHY.

My Role

As the Algorithm Lead for PNCHY, my focus is on developing the intelligence behind one of our most exciting concepts: Density Drops. By building an algorithms that leverage geofencing, user behavior, and real-time data to create dynamic interactions between users and local businesses.

A key part of bringing this vision to life is our use of Mapbox. Their powerful mapping and geolocation technologies allow us to create an interactive and customizable map experience that serves as the foundation for many of our location-based features. By utilizing Mapbox’s tools for real-time mapping, geofencing, and location intelligence, we can design experiences that are not only visually engaging but also intuitive, responsive, and tailored to the needs of both businesses and consumers.

In today’s digital world, large corporations often dominate online visibility through massive advertising budgets, sophisticated recommendation systems, and AI-driven marketing tools. Small independent brick-and-mortar businesses are often left fighting for attention in an increasingly crowded marketplace.

In our brainstorming meeting, we came up with a concept that we have not seen before in other apps. Rather than relying solely on traditional advertising, we’re exploring new ways to create discoverability, helping local businesses get noticed through real-world engagement, community participation, and location-based experiences. The goal is to transform everyday movement and exploration into opportunities for people to discover businesses they may have otherwise never known existed.

My role is to help design the systems that make these experiences possible. While I can’t reveal everything we’re building just yet, we’re developing innovative approaches that blend location awareness, community activity, and intelligent decision-making to create moments that feel rewarding, engaging, and beneficial for both businesses and consumers.

What excites me most is that Density Drops are not simply about rewards, they’re about creating opportunities for discovery. We believe there is tremendous value in helping people reconnect with the businesses that make their communities unique, and we’re working on ways to make that experience feel natural, fun, and meaningful.

Impact and Growth:

Working on PNCHY represents a meaningful opportunity for me to grow both technically and professionally. It allows me to apply concepts from applied mathematics, system design, and real-time data processing to solve complex real-world problems at scale.

More importantly, PNCHY is built with the mission of empowering small businesses within our community. By driving foot traffic and creating innovative ways for customers to engage locally, the platform helps businesses increase visibility and compete in an increasingly digital marketplace.

The future of Density Drops is something I am incredibly excited about, and while we’re only beginning to scratch the surface of what’s possible, I believe we’re building something that has the potential to redefine how people discover and engage with local businesses in the age of AI.
